ICAO specifies that such travel document are to use biometric identification, facial, fingerprint and iris recognition, more often a digitized facial image and a set of fingerprints data are to be stored inside the contactless smart chip within the passports.
Such passport together with biometric features in relation to Machine Readable Passports are more commonly known as "ePassports" to denote such globally-interoperable passport documents.
